Know the Point Distribution
The SAT Math section has 44 questions across two modules. The four domains are weighted differently:
- Algebra: ~35% (13-15 questions) — highest weight
- Advanced Math: ~35% (13-15 questions)
- Problem-Solving & Data Analysis: ~15% (5-7 questions)
- Geometry & Trigonometry: ~15% (5-7 questions)
To score 700+, you need to answer approximately 38-40 out of 44 correctly. That means you can miss 4-6 questions.
Strategy 1: Perfect the High-Weight Topics First
Algebra and Advanced Math together make up 70% of the test. If you master these two domains, you already have a floor of ~600.
Priority order:
- Linear equations (appears on every test)
- Systems of equations (2-4 questions per test)
- Quadratics (2-3 questions per test)
- Percentages and ratios (reliable easy points)
- Trig shortcuts (easy points once you know them)
Strategy 2: Time Management
You have roughly 96 seconds per question (70 minutes / 44 questions). But not all questions are equal.
- Difficulty 1-2 questions: aim for 45-60 seconds
- Difficulty 3 questions: aim for 90 seconds
- Difficulty 4-5 questions: allow 2-3 minutes
The rule: Never spend more than 3 minutes on one question. Mark it, move on, come back if time allows.
Strategy 3: The Adaptive Module
The Digital SAT is adaptive. Module 2 is harder or easier based on your Module 1 performance. This means Module 1 accuracy matters enormously.
In Module 1: Go slow, be accurate. Double-check easy questions. A strong Module 1 unlocks the harder Module 2, which is where 700+ scores are made.
Strategy 4: Use the Answer Choices
On multiple choice questions, the SAT gives you four options. Use them:
- Backsolve: Plug answer choices into the equation. Start with B or C.
- Eliminate: If the answer must be positive, cross out negative options.
- Estimate: If the question involves , eliminate answers that are way off.
Strategy 5: Know Your Calculator
The SAT allows a graphing calculator on both modules. Use it for:
- Graphing to find intersections (solves systems instantly)
- Checking arithmetic on percentage problems
- Evaluating complex expressions

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spending too long on hard questions: A 700+ score means missing 4-6. Accept that some questions are designed to be skipped.
- Not reviewing Module 1: Your Module 1 accuracy determines your Module 2 difficulty. Review every answer before submitting Module 1.
- Ignoring easy points: Geometry and trig are only 15% of the test, but those questions are often formulaic and quick. Do not skip them.
